RANZCR Exam Dates 2026–2027: Sittings, Application Windows and Results

RANZCR clinical radiology exam dates for late 2026 and 2027: written and OSCER sittings, application windows, results dates and eligibility rules.

The next application window open is for the Phase 2 written examinations, Sitting 1 2027: applications open 19 October 2026 and close 16 November 2026, and the papers are sat on 28–29 January 2027. That is according to the clinical radiology examinations page of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR — the college that runs specialist training and examinations for radiologists in Australia and New Zealand), checked on 19 October 2026.

Every date below comes from that page or from the College’s Clinical Radiology Training Program Handbook, version 2.6 (approved August 2026). Dates change between years, so check the College’s page again before you request leave or apply.

Table of Contents

The clinical radiology program has two examined phases. Phase 1 has two written examinations: Anatomy, and Applied Imaging Technology (AIT — imaging physics, technology, radiation protection and patient safety). Phase 2 has three written examinations — Pathology, the Radiology MCQ (multiple-choice question) paper and Case Reporting — followed by the OSCER (Objective Structured Clinical Examination in Radiology — the College’s capstone assessment of readiness to practise independently, run as seven stations of image-based cases with two examiners each).

The College lists the Phase 1 examinations as online-proctored, the Phase 2 written examinations at venues in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, and the OSCER as face to face in Sydney.

Practical rule: put the application close date in your calendar before the exam date. The handbook states that applications must reach the College by 5.00 pm AEST/AEDT (Australian Eastern Standard or Daylight Time) on the closing date, and that late applications will not be accepted.

The recurring pattern behind the timetable

The handbook (version 2.6, August 2026) sets out the general shape of each year. Use it to anticipate a window before the exact dates are published, not as a substitute for them.

Examination Sitting 1 Sitting 2
Phase 1 (Anatomy and AIT) Applications January/February; exams April; results end of May Applications June/July; exams October; results end of November
Phase 2 written Applications October/November; exams January; results March Applications April/May; exams July; results September
Phase 2 OSCER Applications February/March; exams June; results July Applications July/August; exams November; results December

Older timetables are a trap here. The January 2024 version of the handbook (version 2.4) put Phase 2 written Sitting 1 in March, with applications in December or January. The current handbook and the published 2027 dates move that sitting to January, with applications in October and November. If you are planning from an old document, you will miss the window.

The structure itself dates from the 2022 training program. The version 2.4 handbook records the Phase 1 Anatomy and AIT examinations commencing in 2022, and the Phase 2 examination format commencing from Series 1, 2023. The current handbook applies its Phase 2 examination rules to trainees who commenced from February 2022.

For how college examinations fit into Australian training more broadly, see this guide to Australian medical exams.

Eligibility for each examination

An exam date tells you when an assessment is held, not whether you may sit it. From the handbook, version 2.6, Section 8:

Phase 1 (Anatomy and AIT). You must be within Phase 1 at the time of sitting, a trainee in a RANZCR-accredited training position, and a financial member of the College. You may sit the two papers together or separately. You have a maximum of four attempts at each, within 24 months of commencing training; trainees who do not pass within that limit are withdrawn from the program.

Phase 2 (all components). You must be within Phase 2, or have submitted an eligible Phase 2 progression application and received approval to progress during the application period. You must also hold a RANZCR-accredited training position and be a financial member. Then, per component:

You have a maximum of three attempts at each Phase 2 examination, and a maximum of 48 months FTE in Phase 2 to complete all of them.

Progressing from Phase 1 to Phase 2 needs a minimum of 12 months FTE accredited training plus the Phase 1 requirements: both examinations, the early-training competencies, workplace-based assessments and six-monthly Director of Training reviews.

If your training time is close to a threshold, confirm your record with the College and your Director of Training before the application closes rather than estimating it.

How to apply

The handbook describes the process for both phases:

  1. Talk to your Director of Training first. The handbook asks trainees to discuss readiness with their Director of Training before completing the form.
  2. Complete the online application form for the relevant phase, selecting the examinations you intend to sit.
  3. Submit before 5.00 pm AEST/AEDT on the closing date. Late applications are not accepted.
  4. Watch for the acknowledgement. The College aims to email an acknowledgement within 10 business days and does not confirm receipt by phone. If none arrives in that time, contact the College’s examinations team straight away.

Fees are set out on the College’s fees page and are not reproduced here, because they change.

Planning your year around the dates

Start with the application close dates and the exam dates for your component, then map your roster, leave and training milestones against them. Leave usually needs negotiating with your department well before an exam, so raise it early.

For ideas on structuring revision around clinical work, see this guide to medical exam preparation. The same habit applies to any college: use the pattern to orient yourself, then verify the dates for your sitting, as with RACGP exam dates for general practice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sit Phase 1 and Phase 2 examinations in the same year?

The rules allow it in principle, but the training-time thresholds decide it. Phase 2 eligibility needs Phase 2 status or approved progression, which itself needs at least 12 months FTE of accredited training and both Phase 1 examinations passed. Pathology then needs 12 months FTE by the application closing date, and the Radiology MCQ and Case Reporting need 24 months. Map your own training months against the closing dates above and confirm with your Director of Training.

What if I miss an application deadline?

The handbook states that late applications will not be accepted. Your next option is the following sitting, which for most components is roughly six months later.

How are results released?

On the dates the College publishes for each sitting (listed in the tables above). The handbook states that Phase 1 results are uploaded to the ePortfolio, with an email notification when they are.

Are Phase 1 examinations online?

The College’s examinations page lists the Phase 1 Anatomy and AIT examinations as online-proctored. Check the College’s instructions for your sitting for the exam-day requirements.
